Today, let’s look north and east at Bartlett — one of the most important suburbs in the Memphis area, but with a personality all its own.

Bartlett is not trying to be Germantown. It is not trying to be Collierville. And that is part of what makes it interesting.

Bartlett is an established, everyday Memphis suburb: strong neighborhoods, mature trees, schools, churches, parks, youth sports, local businesses, medical access, retail corridors, and families who may have lived in the same part of town for years.

It also sits in a very strategic part of Shelby County.

Bartlett connects Memphis, Raleigh, Cordova, Lakeland, Arlington, and the Highway 64/Wolfchase corridor. That means it has a lot of normal daily movement — residents, shoppers, workers, school traffic, delivery traffic, medical visits, and people passing through.

That movement shapes the safety picture.

Bartlett is generally viewed as one of the stronger suburban communities in the Memphis region. It has a professional police department, excellent local school district, a full-service hospital, a strong parks system, and a broad business base that includes retail, healthcare, service businesses, light industrial, logistics-related companies, and medical-device manufacturing.

But safe does not mean nothing happens.

In Bartlett, the practical risk profile is usually less about dramatic crime and more about opportunity-based incidents (the list is nearly identical to Collierville & Germantown):

Vehicle break-ins. Theft from unlocked cars. Shoplifting. Package theft. Garage and shed theft. Traffic crashes. Fraud and financial crimes. Parking lot incidents. After-hours business concerns.

For homeowners: lock your vehicles, remove valuables, close garage doors, use good lighting, keep shrubs trimmed near windows and doors, and make sure cameras cover driveways, porches, side gates, and the places people actually walk.

For business owners: think beyond the front door. Look at parking lots, rear entrances, employee doors, dumpsters, delivery areas, registers, storage rooms, and after-hours access. A camera system needs to be well thought out & configured so you don't miss the parts of the property where problems actually happen.

For visitors: Bartlett is a great place to shop, eat, go to school events, visit the hospital, enjoy parks, or run everyday errands. Just don’t let a familiar area make you careless. Lock up, park smart, and keep valuables out of sight.

Bartlett has a lot of the ingredients that help a suburb stay strong — established neighborhoods, active families, schools, churches, parks, healthcare, local businesses, and a police department that is visible in the community.

But communities like Bartlett stay strong because people keep doing the basics well.
