TGIF! Been a LONG week for me but it looks like we're going to get a few days of Spring-like weather this weekend. Think I may have to smoke some ribs or do some smashburgers on the grill...

It's a rare day where I don't speak with a mid-south homeowner, investor, property manager, or business manager about security cameras. Today's systems do some really cool stuff, but the value lies in knowing HOW to use the basics well. Having a good system on site is great, but is it easy to use? Here's a quick "reality check" for both residential & commercial users on cameras.

TL;DR: If your camera system can’t pull the exact clip you need in seconds (not 30 minutes), you don’t really have “security”… you have archives. Speed of retrieval is the whole point.

I hear this all the time: “We’re happy with our camera system.” And honestly — you might be… right up until the day you need it. Here’s the test I like to use (because it exposes the truth fast):

✅ Can you find one specific moment quickly?

Not “it recorded.” Not “it’s stored.” I mean: Can you retrieve the exact clip immediately when it matters? What usually happens with older / basic DVR setups: • Someone scrolls… and scrolls… and scrolls • Timelines get scrubbed and guessed • 20–30 minutes disappears just to find one incident

In Memphis, that delay matters because most real-world incidents are time-sensitive: • parking lot thefts (Poplar corridor, Germantown Pkwy nodes, Midtown shops) • hit-and-runs, suspicious vehicles, repeat offenders • employee/internal incidents where details get fuzzy fast

The real difference isn’t “cameras”... It’s capability: • Search (vehicle color/type, clothing color, motion events, zones) • Speed (seconds, not half an hour) • Clarity (usable faces/plates + clean export/share)

Because security isn’t “recording everything.” It’s retrieving anything — fast. If you’re still “scrolling back,” you’re already behind. Ask yourself: If something happened in your parking lot today, could you pull the exact clip you need in under 60 seconds?
