Suburb Series: Collierville, TN

Yesterday we looked at Germantown. Today, let’s keep moving east and talk about Collierville — another major Memphis-area suburb, but with a very different personality.

Collierville is not just “the next town over” and home of the Dragons.

It has the historic Town Square, strong neighborhoods, a large school system, Baptist Memorial Hospital-Collierville, destination retail, corporate campuses, logistics access, and a growing east Shelby County footprint that connects Memphis, Fayette County, and North Mississippi traffic patterns.

That mix matters when we talk about safety.

Collierville is generally perceived as one of the stronger, safer suburban communities in the Memphis region. It has a well-established police department, strong civic expectations, a high-performing school district, and a business base that includes major employers, medical services, retail, offices, manufacturing, and distribution.

But “safe suburb” does not mean “no risk.”

In Collierville, the everyday safety picture is less about constant violent crime and more about the risks that come with a busy, prosperous town:

Retail theft. Vehicle break-ins. Shoplifting. Traffic crashes. DUI enforcement. Package theft. Business access issues. Parking lot liability. After-hours property protection.

That makes Collierville a little different from Germantown.

Germantown often feels more medical-office, residential, and Poplar-corridor oriented. Collierville has more of a town-square-plus-growth-corridor feel — historic charm on one end, large retail and corporate activity on another, and a lot of movement around Poplar, Byhalia, Highway 385, Houston Levee, and school/event traffic.

For residents, the practical advice is simple: lock vehicles, remove valuables, secure garage doors, keep porches visible, use lighting well, and make sure cameras actually cover driveways, doors, and the areas where people approach the home.

For business owners, especially retail, medical, restaurant, and office users, think beyond “do we have cameras?” Think about coverage at entrances, exits, registers, parking lots, employee doors, delivery areas, and after-hours access points. Also think about documentation. Good camera placement and access control do not just help with crime — they can help reduce confusion, support incident reports, and protect the business from avoidable liability.

For visitors, Collierville is a great place to shop, eat, work, attend school events, visit the Square, or spend the day with family. Just don’t let a nice area make you careless. Lock up, park smart, keep valuables out of sight, and stay aware in large parking lots.

The positive takeaway is this:

Collierville has many of the ingredients that help a suburb stay strong — engaged residents, strong schools, a professional police department, quality employers, healthcare access, and a real sense of local identity.

But strong communities stay strong because people keep doing the small things well.
