Suburb Series: Arlington, Lakeland & Eads — The 38002 Side of Shelby County

So far in this suburb series, we’ve looked at Germantown, Collierville, and Bartlett.

Today, we’re doing something a little different.

Instead of focusing on one city, we’re combining three closely connected east Shelby County communities: Arlington, Lakeland, and Eads.

Why combine them?

Because many people in the Memphis area think of this part of the county as one general “38002” world — even though Arlington and Lakeland are separate municipalities, and Eads is more of an unincorporated, rural-edge community.

That distinction matters.

Arlington has grown from a small town into one of Shelby County’s most recognizable family-oriented suburbs. It has its own schools, local businesses, churches, parks, youth sports, and a downtown/small-town identity.

Lakeland has a different feel: lake communities, newer residential growth, schools, parks, trails, commuter families, and quick access to I-40, Highway 64, Canada Road, and the Wolfchase/Cordova side of the metro.

Eads feels different again — more space, larger lots, rural roads, private drives, acreage, barns, shops, detached garages, equipment, trailers, and a quieter edge-of-county lifestyle.

That means the safety conversation here needs to be different from Germantown or Collierville. This is not just about storefronts, parking lots, and neighborhood cameras.

In the Arlington/Lakeland/Eads area, security also means thinking about distance, visibility, access, and response.

A long driveway changes things. A detached garage changes things. A house backing up to woods changes things. A trailer, ATV, boat, mower, or utility vehicle parked outside changes things. A home that sits dark while the family is at ball practice, church, school events, or out of town changes things.

This area is generally perceived as one of the lower-crime, higher-quality-of-life parts of Shelby County. But a single “crime ranking” can be misleading because we’re not talking about one city with one police department and one exact service model.

Arlington, Lakeland, and Eads are connected — but they are not identical. The most realistic issues tend to be opportunity-based:

Unlocked vehicles. Theft from driveways or garages. Package theft. Shop or shed break-ins. Trailer and equipment theft. Traffic crashes on busy corridors. Suspicious vehicles on rural roads. After-hours access issues at small businesses, churches, and schools.

For homeowners, the advice is not just “get cameras.” It is: cover the right areas.

Driveway approach. Garage doors. Side gates. Back patio. Detached shop or barn. Trailer parking. Mailbox or package drop area. The part of the property where someone would actually enter, hide, or load something up.

For larger lots, lighting matters too. Not stadium lighting — smart, well-placed lighting that protects the approach points without making the property feel like a prison yard. This is critical, and good lighting can be a game changer when it comes to security camera performance.

For businesses, churches, schools, and community facilities, think about the rhythm of the area. Weekday traffic may be calm, then a school event, youth sports night, church gathering, or weekend tournament can suddenly change the parking lot, foot traffic, and liability picture.

Good security in 38002 is not about fear. It is about matching the plan to the property. Arlington, Lakeland, and Eads have a lot going for them: strong families, good schools, parks, churches, open space, local pride, and a growing role in the future of east Shelby County.

The takeaway is simple:

The farther you get from dense city streets, the more security becomes about layers — visibility, lighting, access control, cameras, alarms, neighbor awareness, and common sense.

Different communities need different security thinking.

And 38002 is a perfect example.
