Memorial Day Weekend in Memphis: Celebrate Well, Remember Why 🇺🇸

Memorial Day weekend usually feels like the beginning of summer in Memphis.

Cookouts. Road trips. Pool time. Family gatherings. Grills going. Music playing. People heading Downtown, to the river, to the lake, or just enjoying a long weekend at home.

All of that is good.

But Memorial Day is also one of those holidays where it helps to pause for a minute and remember what the day is really about.

This is not simply a “thank a veteran” holiday. That is important, but Memorial Day is specifically about remembering the men and women who died while serving our country.

And here in Memphis, that history is closer than many people realize.

Memphis National Cemetery in Nutbush is the final resting place for thousands of service members, including many unknown soldiers from the Civil War era. It also connects to a tragic piece of local history many Memphians never learned much about: the Sultana disaster.

The Sultana was a steamboat carrying Union soldiers home after the Civil War when it exploded on the Mississippi River near Memphis in 1865. Many of those men had survived prison camps and were finally headed home. Instead, the disaster became one of the deadliest maritime tragedies in American history.

That is part of our local Memorial Day story.

But Memorial Day is not only about the distant past. It also reaches into the modern Memphis community — families who lost loved ones in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, Iraq, Afghanistan, and other service-connected missions. There are people all across Shelby County, Fayette County, DeSoto County, Tipton County, and the broader Mid-South who carry those names, stories, photos, folded flags, and memories every day.

So yes, enjoy the weekend.

Just leave a little room for gratitude.

A few practical Memphis-area safety reminders:

If you’re heading Downtown, to Beale Street, the riverfront, a party, or a cookout, plan your ride before the night gets late. Designated driver, rideshare, or sober friend — decide early. Uber/Lyft make this SO easy so no excuse for driving impaired these days.

If you’re parking somewhere busy, don’t leave purses, firearms, wallets, laptops, bags, tools, or shopping items visible in the vehicle. Most vehicle break-ins are crimes of opportunity. Don’t make your car the easy one.

If you’re hosting at home, keep gates closed, exterior lights working, cars locked, and valuables out of sight. A good gathering can still have basic security habits in place.

If you’re grilling, keep the grill away from siding, fences, garages, covered patios, and anything that can catch fire. Keep kids and pets out of the cooking area, too.

If you’re traveling, don’t advertise an empty house online in real time. Post the pictures later. Before you leave, lock doors, close the garage, pause obvious deliveries, and use lights or smart-home schedules to make the home look lived in.

If water is involved — pool, lake, river, pond, or backyard party — assign one adult to actually watch the water. Not “everybody’s watching.” One person watching.

Memphis knows how to celebrate. Food, music, family, history, and community are all part of who we are.
