Just about every week, I’ll meet with a new homeowner or small commercial property owner who mentioned insurance discounting with active monitored alarm services. If you’re looking to make a move this Summer, don’t overlook how much insurers reward real safety improvements. Knowing what carriers look for can directly cut your premiums.

Across many major carriers — including State Farm, Allstate, Nationwide, Liberty Mutual, Travelers and others — insurers commonly list protective devices like monitored burglar and fire alarms, sprinkler systems, and security systems as discount eligible features on homeowners and commercial property policies. Typical savings on standard homeowners policies for a professionally monitored security/alarm system are often in the ~5 %–15 % range, depending on the insurer and the system’s capabilities. Be sure to confirm this as there is no guarantee that such discounts are extended by all carriers.

Discounts may vary by company, but many providers explicitly list fire alarms, smoke detectors, burglar alarms and sprinkler systems in their discount schedules — and some carriers extend additional credits for smart or connected home devices.

To actually get the credit at bind/close, insurers generally want documentation showing: • the system is installed and active, • it is professionally monitored by a central station, and • you can provide proof such as an installation invoice or monitoring contract/account number (many insurers also appreciate confirmation the central station has police/fire dispatch capabilities or UL listing).

For commercial lines, the process is similar: ask the underwriting/risk control team about the “protective devices” or “risk control” credit, and be ready to share inspection reports or service logs.

These measures aren’t just for peace of mind — they signal lower risk to insurers and can meaningfully reduce premiums when you present the right documentation upfront.
