Insurance discounts are one of the most overlooked reasons to take security technology seriously. For both homeowners and business owners, the conversation usually starts with the same question:

“Will this help lower my insurance cost?”

Sometimes the answer is yes — but here’s the important part: not every insurance carrier gives credit for the same things.

A basic monitored alarm may qualify for one type of discount. A professionally monitored system with video verification may carry more weight. For a business, cameras covering entrances, parking lots, registers, warehouses, gates, or access-controlled doors may help show the insurer that risk is being managed more actively.

The key is documentation, and don't assume discounts apply universally across all carriers.

Your insurance carrier may want proof of monitoring, equipment details, camera coverage, access logs, video retention length, service records, or written verification that the system is active. In some cases, that information may not only help with premium discounts — it can also help speed up claims if something does happen.

A few good questions to ask your insurance carrier:

• What specific security controls qualify for a discount? • Do monitored alarms receive more credit than local-only systems? • Do you give additional credit for video verification? • How much video retention do you prefer? • Are exterior cameras, parking lot coverage, or access control part of your risk scoring? • What documentation do you need from the security provider? • Can verified security systems reduce deductibles or improve claim handling?

The bigger point is this:

Security technology should not just be viewed as “equipment on the wall.”

When it is designed correctly, it can help reduce theft, document incidents, verify what happened, improve response, support claims, and potentially lower the cost of risk over time. Most importantly, being proactive in promoting safety & security can give peace of mind that you've done something meaningful for family, employees, patron, etc.

So before adding or upgrading a system, it is worth having a quick conversation with your insurance agent.

You may find out that the right alarm, camera, access control, or video verification setup does more than protect the property.

It may also help pay for itself in ways most people never think to ask about.
