Memphis got some encouraging news this week: MPD says overall crime is down 41.5% through the first quarter of 2026. That is a big number, and I think it is fair for Memphis to take that as a positive.

At the same time, most of us know how this city works. A strong citywide number does not automatically mean every neighborhood, every business corridor, or every family suddenly feels “safe.” So this is probably the right posture: be encouraged, but stay thoughtful.

In the report, MPD pointed to enforcement, community participation and technology as key factors in the reduction. Neighborhood Watch involvement is growing. The Downtown Command Center continues to play a role. And Connect Memphis now includes more than 13,000 registered cameras, with more than 2,700 integrated into the system (NOTE: this is an OPT-IN program; let me know if you’d like to know more about ConnectMemphis).

That matters because real public safety is usually not one magic fix. It is layers. Policing. Community cooperation. Better visibility. Better tools. Better follow-through.

And that last part matters too.

While the crime numbers are moving in the right direction, Tennessee lawmakers are also pushing for more transparency on what happens after arrests are made in Memphis Safe Task Force cases. The new reporting requirement is meant to give the public more visibility when cases are reduced, dismissed, or resolved through plea agreements.

Memphis does not have to choose between supporting crime reduction and asking for accountability. We should want both. We should want fewer victims, fewer repeat offenders, and a clearer understanding of what happens once a case enters the system. So yes, a 41%+ drop through Q1 is good news. It is worth noticing. It is worth building on.

Now the bigger question is whether Memphis can sustain it.
