Happy Wednesday. I came across this resource & thought it’s be worth sharing here: the MPD Public Safety Incidents Explorer inside the Memphis Data Hub. I recommend the Chrome browser if you’re going to use the Map view as it didn’t like Edge for some reason.

It’s essentially a searchable public map of reported incidents. You can type in an address or place, switch between Map and Table views, filter by a recent time window or a custom date range, and narrow results by crime category. The categories shown include aggravated assault, arson, murder, robbery, burglary/break & enter, larceny/theft, motor vehicle theft, and other crimes. If you want a quick visual feel for an area, the map is useful. If you want to scan incidents more cleanly, the table view is the better move. Of note, the only reports listed are those recorded by the Memphis Police Department so you won’t see any data from Bartlett, Germantown, Collierville, or any other suburbs with their own police force. Also, reports made with the Shelby County Sheriff or Desoto County aren’t included.

The City of Memphis built the Data Hub to make public data easier to access and to support more transparent, data-driven decisions. City materials also describe its public safety dashboards as a way for people to see what, when, and where incidents happen across Memphis. The incident dataset itself goes back to 2019 and is updated each morning by 6:00 a.m.

To me, this is a great context tool to get a general idea for law enforcement efforts based on neighborhood, reported crime, etc. A single pin on a map never tells the whole story, but patterns over time can help homeowners, renters, and business owners make better decisions about routes, parking habits, lighting, cameras, staffing, and general day-to-day awareness.
