Happy May 1st! Memphis in May season is here, and this weekend kicks off with RiverBeat at Tom Lee Park.
This is one of the best times of year to enjoy Memphis — music, barbecue, the riverfront, downtown energy, and visitors from all over. The goal is simple: have a great time, but do the small things that keep your day from turning into a headache (if you were ever on a BBQ team during the early 2000s you know what I'm talking about when it comes to headaches after 3 days at the river).
For RiverBeat, May 1–3 at Tom Lee Park, plan your arrival before you leave the house. Downtown parking fills up fast, so decide ahead of time whether you’re parking in a garage, using street parking, or taking rideshare. If you drive, don’t leave bags, purses, backpacks, firearms, electronics, shopping bags, or chargers visible in the vehicle. Even an empty-looking bag can create curiosity. Lock it, clear it out, and take a quick picture of where you parked. Also, keep some situational awareness active at all times. If something "feels off" don't ignore it & take a good look around.
RiverBeat is also using a clear bag policy, and the festival is cashless. Bring only what you need: ID, phone, card, approved bag, empty refillable water bottle, sunscreen, sunglasses, and maybe earplugs. Less stuff means less to keep up with.
A few simple safety habits go a long way:
• Stay with your group when moving between stages, food, restrooms, and exits • Pick a meet-up spot in case phones die or service gets crowded • Keep your phone charged and avoid carrying it in a back pocket • Use rideshare pickup/drop-off areas instead of wandering side streets late • Don’t post your parking location or “we’re gone all day” updates in real time • If something feels off, move toward event staff, lighting, and crowds
RiverBeat’s official safety info also says attendees can text 901-621-5222 if they see something suspicious.
Looking ahead, Memphis in May continues with the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest at Liberty Park from May 13–16. That event brings big crowds, tents, teams, vendors, and a lot of foot traffic around Midtown. Same rule applies: pack light, expect parking to be busy, wear comfortable shoes, and don’t leave valuables visible in the car. Also remember, BBQ Fest is a competition — not every team tent is open to the public — so check ticket options and food experiences before you go.
Then on Saturday, May 23, the Great American River Run brings the half marathon, 10K, and 5K through downtown Memphis. Start time is 7:00 AM, with gear check opening at 5:30 AM. Runners and families should plan parking early, keep keys and ID secured, avoid leaving valuables in gear-check bags, and agree on a post-race meeting spot.
It’s Memphis. It’s May. Go enjoy it. Summertime heat & humidity is just around the corner so don't waste what should be gorgeous weather this weekend even if a tad brisk early and in the evening.
Have fun, but plan ahead. Pack light. Stay aware. Protect your vehicle. Keep your people together, and build some fantastic memories!
